Specifically targeted for pre-school through middle school audiences, this one hour mini-concert has also been successfully presented to families and senior citizens. The program teaches the elements of jazz-- rhythm, melody, harmony and improvisation. A narrator and a minimum of five jazz artists demonstrate and explain their instrument's role in the creation and evolution of jazz music. The audience participates by singing and playing basic percussion instruments that can be made at home or school. Reading lists of books on jazz and famous jazz musicians are distributed.
This CBJF project is geared toward elementary through middle school students, especially those who do not have music programs in their schools. Clinics are conducted by professional and/or advanced student musicians with focus on the history and elements of jazz. All styles of jazz music are played and key musicians responsible for the development of the styles are discussed. Students participate by singing, playing basic percussion instruments and composing a song.
A hands on computer workshop allows students to explore topics relating to jazz, e.g. elements of jazz, key artists, and musical instruments. Teachers are given teaching aides that are used to integrate jazz music into geography, history and social studies lessons. Local volunteers assist teachers and students in the classroom on an ongoing basis. When possible, live concerts are performed in the school for the entire student body.
INSTRUMENT LOAN PROGRAM
Do YOU or someone you know have a music instrument that is not being used? Please consider donating it to The Clifford Brown Jazz Foundation. Our loan program is available to talented youngsters whose families cannot afford to buy an instrument. Unfortunately, most schools around the country no longer have rental programs so demand is high. A student may keep the instrument as long as he/she plays it, stays in school and is not involved with drugs and/or alcohol. Due to lack of inventory we are unable to provide needed instruments.
The Internal Revenue Service has determined that CBJF is a non-profit, publicly supported organization as described in section 501 (c) (3) of the Revenue Code. As such, donors may deduct contributions, bequests, legacies, transfers or gifts to the extent allowed by law. As a donor, you will receive a letter from us acknowledging your contribution. You may use the letter to verify your income tax deduction.
Instruments needing repair will also be accepted. The Foundation will pay shipping charges. Please contact us at laruew@pacbell.net.
